
PROFESSIONAL RECOGNITION
Due to the nature of specialization within the Loss Adjusting profession and the wide variety of types of claims adjusted, many people enter the Loss Adjusting profession from a varied array of careers such as Engineering, Construction, Law, Law enforcement, Quantity Surveying, as well as from the Insurance Industry with various qualifications and applied skills. Whilst these qualifications are accepted for technical skill in the applied context, there are core competencies to the profession of Loss Adjusting that need to be learned and applied to be seen as a proficient loss adjuster.
ILASA requires its members to have an official designation that is recognized by The South African Qualifications Authority which is acquired through a board exam process that is held every year.
The Institutes qualification progression pathway starts with an already practicing Loss Adjuster being admitted as a Candidate member for a minimum of one year whereafter they become eligible to sit for an exam in order to qualify for a recognized designation.
Candidate members are those members that are new to the profession of Loss Adjusting and along with on-the-job experience are given the opportunity to learn the Principles of Insurance and good report writing skills to form an excellent foundation in claims handling and within 5 years of must register for elevation to Licentiate by successfully completing the Licentiate board exam.
DESIGNATION COMPTENCIES
LICENTIATE
NQF level 5
A Licentiate Loss Adjuster has a thorough understanding of the principles of insurance and how these may be applied in the handling of a variety of claims and may specialise and handle complex claims. Within 5 years a Licentiate Loss Adjuster may apply to sit for the Associate Designation.
ASSOCIATE
NQF level 7
Holding the designation of Associate is deemed to be the gold standard in handling claims. Associates have demonstrated that they have proven experience and a breadth of knowledge in the successful handling of claims. Within 10 Years an Associate Loss Adjuster may apply to complete a dissertation to obtain the for prestigious designation of Fellow.
FELLOW
NQF level 7
Achieving the designation is a mark of excellence and those elite are recognized for their specialist roles, long work history in the industry and their contribution and achievements in the profession
RETAINING AN ILASA DESIGNATION
Maintaining your membership and designation is dependent on three key components, which are:
Payment of membership fees in full
Adhering to the ILA code of conduct
Members must have valid Professional Indemnity Insurance
Fulfilling the CPD requirement annually
The annual CPD requirement requires that members remain updated and informed of industry trends, legal and case law updates as well as Insurance policy trends and changes. ILA Members are required to complete and record a minimum of 20 CPD hours per annum.
